Politically correct terminology for office / workplace - Part I

The whole idea behind using politically sensitive and correct terminology is to create a comfortable and productive work atmosphere. As we become a more closely-knit society consisting of people from all over the world with varied religious beliefs, it helps to show respect towards people from various backgrounds by observing some easy to follow rules of conduct.

1) We must use gender-neutral terms whenever possible. For example, saying "chairperson" or simply "chair" in place of "chairman" or "chairwoman" is a better choice.

2) Avoid telling jokes or making comments that key off of racial, ethnic or sexual stereotypes, even if those present don't belong to the target group. It is a good idea to avoid "sardar jokes", "blonde jokes" etc in an office environment. Such humor can often make people uncomfortable regardless of their backgrounds.

3) Use acceptable terminology when referring to various racial, ethnic, religious and other minority groups. Proper terms include "African-American" instead of "blacks", "Caucasian" instead of "whites", "Native American" instead of "Red Indians" and so on. As you can see most of the wrong terms used above refer to the color of the skin, hence we must be cognizant of this mistake.

4) Avoid using the word female, it is considered politically incorrect of late. Lady or woman is a better alternative.

5) One must be aware of the surroundings when taking personal calls. Talking out loud or using personal and offensive language over the phone at workplace may make nearby co-workers uncomfortable.

6) It's always safe to wish people "Happy Vacations" or "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" / "Happy Diwali" etc. "Happy Vacations" or "Happy Holidays" is an appropriate and religion neutral phrase which keeps people of all religions in good humor.
